In 1971, the voting age in the United States was lowered to 18. That was a massive improvement, allowing millions of Americans the chance to cast a vote for the first time. For generations, we have benefited from our youth being able to participate in our elections. For many people, who they are governed by locally is of dire significance, particularly if they are unable to immediately leave that area or region. In 1965, an Amendment to the Voting Rights Act banned the use of literacy tests, poll taxes, and other obstacles designed to keep people from voting. It is imperative that we continue down such roads even still. In 1920, the 19th Amendment was added to the Constitution, giving women across the nation the ability to vote. All of these are gains we could not have hoped to enjoy without the ability and will to vote.
The reasons to cast a ballot are so numerous, it’s harder to think of a reason not to – as we have seen in recent years with landmark decisions being repealed, it’s not enough to fight for and gain our rights. It is an ongoing struggle that we must continuously engage in, in order to keep the rights that we gain. Voting is also a poignant way to fight against discrimination, racism, transphobia, antisemitism, and so much more. It is our civic responsibility to create safe environments for all people; preventing instances of harm that may target specific groups of Americans. Having agency over the direction our taxes go towards is also of vital importance. Whether our money is going into infrastructure, education, or environmental conservation, we deserve the right to dictate where our money goes. Especially as paying taxes is one of the relatively few things Americans universally experience.

In local elections particularly, victory for one candidate or another may be grasped by just a mere fraction of the votes. Your decision to engage in voting could be the difference in swaying what was once a close race, to a win for the candidate who more closely aligns with your views, and has your best interest in their mind. Sitting out from voting not only does a disservice to yourself, but additionally to your children, your community, and their future.
